9 Exciting Activities to Make the Most of the End of Summer Break with Your Kids

As the end of summer break approaches, we've been trying to find activities to do together to make the days full of fun and laughter. My kids are 10, 11 and 15, so it's definitely getting harder to find things they all like to do. But, I think we have been pretty successful so far!

From outdoor adventures to creative indoor projects, there are plenty of activities to enjoy together for all ages before school starts back up.

Here's a list of 9 activities that we did to try to make the most of the end of summer break.

1. Picnic in the Park:

Yes, it may sound simple, but even older kids love this! Pack a delicious picnic basket (have them help you pack the basket!) filled with their favorite treats and head to a nearby park. Enjoy the fresh air, play some frisbee, kick around a soccer ball, and indulge in outdoor games and laughter. And, if you are capable, play with them. Put the phone away and enjoy this time. Moments are fleeting and you don't want to miss anything!

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt:

Organize a nature scavenger hunt in your backyard or a local nature trail. Create a list of items for your kids to find, such as specific leaves, rocks, or even different types of birds. This activity encourages observation skills and a love for the outdoors. We have been doing scavenger hunts since my kids were little and they still love them! You can come up with the lists yourself or grab something like this from Amazon. We love this one because it works both indoors and outdoors.

3. DIY Outdoor Movie Night:

Transform your backyard into a cozy outdoor movie theater. Set up a projector and screen (we use the side of the house as a screen), spread out blankets and cushions, and enjoy a family-friendly movie under the stars. We do this at least twice per month during the summer. We even invite the neighborhood kid to join us sometimes! Don't forget the popcorn!

4. Creative Craft Day:

Gather art supplies and spend a day creating crafts with your kids. From painting and making friendship bracelets to building a mini cardboard city, this is a perfect opportunity to nurture their creativity. We especially like having "drawing contests." We take turns choosing what subject everyone has to draw. Then we set the timer for 5 minutes and then reveal our creations!

5. Science Experiments:

My son's personal favorite. Simple and fun science experiments that can be done at home! Create slime, build a volcano, or make a rainbow in a jar. These hands-on activities foster curiosity and a love for learning. And if your kids are anything like mine, be prepared to answer a million curious questions! We love this science kit from Amazon.

6. Baking and Cooking:

Spend time together in the kitchen baking cookies, making homemade pizza, or assembling DIY ice cream sundaes. Cooking with kids is not only enjoyable but also a great way to teach them about measurements and teamwork. My oldest loves to cook, while my middle child likes to bake. My youngest likes making drinks. We make THE best homemade lemonade and then set up a lemonade stand. The kids love it and they make money of their own!

7. Backyard Camping Adventure:

An absolute summer favorite. Set up a tent in your backyard and have a mini camping adventure. (Of course, a real camping trip is fun, too!) Roast marshmallows over a fire pit, tell stories under the stars, and enjoy a night of bonding and adventure. This one also doubles well with the outdoor movie night! Why not do both?!

8. Water Balloon Olympics:

This activity is great when the kids have friends over! Organize a series of water balloon games and challenges in your yard. From relay races to target throwing, these water-filled games will keep everyone cool and entertained. Just don't run out of water balloons! Try reusable ones! (We love them!)

9. Memory Scrapbooking:

Gather photos, ticket stubs, theme park maps, stickers from places visited, and any other mementos from the summer, and spend an afternoon creating a scrapbook together. This activity not only preserves precious memories but also encourages storytelling, creativity, and reflection.

10. Time Capsule

Much like #9, but instead, you choose a place to bury a waterproof box not to be dug up until they graduate high school! In addition to adding mementos, encourage them to write a letter to their future selves to put inside! We also had the idea to add a newspaper from the day we buried it inside so we can see what was going on in the world when we dig up the box!

As summer break draws to a close, there's still ample time to create cherished moments with your kids. These 9 activities provide a wide range of options, from outdoor adventures to indoor creativity, ensuring that the remaining days of summer are filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable experiences for the whole family. Enjoy this time while it lasts!
